Apple’s outstanding marketing turned the iPhone into The Gadget to Have for the summer of 2007. And, of course, it was immediately hacked.
The first hack only opened the iPhone to some basic applications, such as a “hello world” welcome screen.
More recently, however, a teenager from New Jersey earned national renown for actually freeing the iPhone for use on networks of other carriers.
The drawback? In the United States, T-Mobile is the only other network the iPhone can be used on. And right now the iPhone is only sold in the U.S.
But one would imagine a global market isn’t far away, so that may only be a temporary rain cloud on the Big News in Hacking. And it seems fair to guess that some decent income stands to be made by buying, unlocking and selling iPhones to customers overseas.
“That’s exactly, like, what I don’t want,” George Hotz said. “I don’t want people making money off this.”
Hotz, 17, posted the hack in his blog. Working with other hackers, two from Russia, he developed the hack, which leaves all the phone’s features but “visual voicemail” alone. It is not simple, however, and does require knowledge and experience with software and a soldering iron.
But wait, there’s more.
Another hack may be available from iPhoneSimFree, a group that claims its hack is solder-free—making it more attractive to many. However, there’s some skepticism over whether the hacks from iPhoneSimFree and iphoneunlocking.com works or not, and it appears that the hack is currently on hold pending legal matters …
