The security of VoIP networks has been debated and debated and debated. With many ways to hack into the system to steal user information, phone services or even listen in, concerns over security may be one of the stumbling blocks to VoIP adoption for many individuals as well as businesses.
VoIP calls are digital data, making them easier to tap into than a traditional phone line. Anyone with the right access and knowledge can listen to what you have to say. For most individuals, unless they are sharing financial data, that is more embarrassing than dangerous; but for businesses, it could be disastrous.
Regardless of the stakes, privacy is important. The good part is that ensuring security is a fairly simple task.
VoIP-News offers some tips to keep your calls more secure:
- Zfone may be one of the simplest ways to protect VoIP calls. With a free beta version available to download, Zfone encryption software is easy to install and use. However, it will only protect calls made to other Zfone users.
- Some VoIP providers offer their own encryption software, so check to see if your provider has such a service available.
- Transport Layer Security and IP Security are two simple encryption methods for VoIP calls. TLS encrypts the data traveling between two applications, and IPsec encrypts information for the devices and their applications.
- Secure Real-Time Transfer Protocol protects VoIP calls without affecting call quality by creating an encryption key for each call.
- If you use a virtual private network for your business, it should feature a built-in encryption device, but it will only secure data from gateway to gateway. Additional protection is required for calls on a LAN.
Session initiation protocol is the standard choice for VoIP and other IP communications. Allowing SIP calls through a firewall while protecting the network is the top security concern for VoIP network administrators. SIP integrates security measures from other protocols like HTTP and SMTP, developed and standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force. SIP trunking is an effective method to connect SIP users securely with callers on the traditional phone system.
