Very helpful information. Consumer education is important. I think it was Syms (old clothing store – for those of you not older than 30) who said “an educated consumer is your best customer”. I will be forwarding it on to our (potential) clients.

As-Sal?mu `Alaykum (?????? ?????)

I know that is very difficult to communicate with our family and friends back home. Living in the United States and UK it is very expensive calling Bangladesh, especially mobile.

I would like to tell everyone about a great company called YupeePhone, they have been providing VOIP (Phone Service Via Internet) for many years now. They have recently added Bangladesh Mobile to their list of FREE DESTINATIONS Alhamdulillah.

How this service works is once you sign up, you will get your username/password/pin sent via email. You will have to go to the website and pick a local access number in your area to call, and enter your pin. You will only have to enter your pin number once; the system will recognize and save your pin number when you call again. Lastly you dial the phone number without 011, just the 880+phone number.

All you need to do is pay one time $18 and you will get 1125 minutes to use in 4 month period of time. The actually price is $20, but if you use this coupon code you will get 10% off insha’allah. At this rate you are paying 1.76 cents per minute. I believe this is a great price.

I personally have been using YupeePhone for over 3 months now, and I would like to say Alhamdulillah this service is very clear, and cheap.

Coupon code is 4520134872

Thanks for the great information. Another thing I would like to add is that most companies require you to have high speed internet to be able to use their services. There is a new company not that many people have heard of called Proxycomm, they are said to be the wave of the future with the VOIP services they provide. They provide all the services above but there is no special equipment required , no contract and no activation fee. Just a low monthly fee. They also have a business opportunity for those interested in cashing in on the VOIP industry. For the month of August 2009 you can become a Proxycomm distributor for free.

@Henry: Thanks for mentioning voipsmear, I think I need that.

Excellent tips by the way, how much does it cost is my first concern because some VoIP service isn’t that cheap anymore and the reason most people will use VoIP is the cheap cost.

I’ve read another good article on choosing voip here -> http://blog.onesuite.com/?p=209

To setup a software based VoIP service, the process is quite simple and generic. All one needs to do is to download any VoIP application (soft phones). Then the application needs to be installed on the machine to be used (PC, PDA or mobile phone). As required by the application, the user may need to sign up and make an account and then can start using the service.

Vonage used to be pretty cheap, but ended up raising their rates a few months ago. My brother has Vonage and has had it for years. I almost went with Vonage, but decided to go with a less well known provider called ViaTalk. A friend from church was happy with their service and I based my decision on that. I am all about word of mouth from real people. I opted for the 1 year prepay option to get the 1 year free deal. It was like $179 plus shipping for the ATA, fees, and something else which ended up being $250. If you divide that by 24 months, it’s about $11 per month. So far, ViaTalk offers good service, more phone features that I know what to do with, and a really good price if you do the prepay option.

I have been looking for a PBX /Mobile integration solution to reduce our telecoms bills – I just have found Agito Networks and have been really impressed…. Worth checking out….

Here is a cut down version of their blurb – but more detail (collateral), webcast and contact detail when you click thru to their website… http://www.agitonetworks.com/blackberry_voip

Agito Networks RoamAnywhere intelligently connects users to the best available wireless network (enterprise WiFi, cellular, home, hotspot), with fast, cost effective and automatic handover as they move between networks.

We support over 45 of the leading smartphones from Nokia. Samsung, HTC, etc., and have also recently announced Agito for BlackBerry, the first enterprise VoIP over WiFi solution for BlackBerry smartphones. Agito for Blackberry brings all of the key benefits of VoWLAN, such as:
Better in-building coverage using your enterprise WLAN
Reduced international mobile expenses – both for direct dialing and international roaming
Increase in productivity and collaboration for mobile workers, with deskphone and PBX features available on the BlackBerry smartphone
Agito for BlackBerry brings these benefits and features to your organisation whether the user is using VoIP over WiFi or cellular. As always, Agito’s award winning RoamAnywhere solution is simple and easy to install and manage, supporting a wide variety of PBXs (including Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, ShoreTel, and many others), all from a power-efficient, single RU appliance.

Hi,
I like the statement that you cannot purchase on price alone. I have seen many companies offer very low prices that even large companies cannot match. One year later these companies would be out of business. So like the article says, it is important to save money but “you get what you pay for”.

Also most companies offer all the features, it would be ridiculous to restrict users from features. This will be greedy and frowned upon. I recommend all users to stay away from companies that restrict such features.

What this article does not mention is fax-over-ip, which i find relatively important for companies. A lot of companies do not offer this service because most companies are re-sellers.

If anyone wants a relatively inexpensive solution for fax over IP or hosted pbx, you might want to consider visiting http://www.entervox.com with anymore questions.

Thank you.

Here’s a side by side comparison of those 4 free softphones I’ve mentioned above.

I think the market is starting to finally tip to the point where ASP delivery of telecommunications services is feasible for the mass market. It’s a shame that the US lags behind many developed nations in terms of broadband internet availability, as this is a major factor affecting adoption.

Great article – I like the stress on Business Grade VoIP. You have covered all of the key decision points for going down the hosted route.

I have an article on my blog (www.computerspot.co.uk) about pre-testing the quality of your Broadband connection as a way of seeing if your broadband is suitable for VoIP. http://www.computerspot.co.uk/why-you-should-carry-out-an-internet-quality-test/

ISG-Telecom is a CLEC regulatory (legal) consulting firm that was founded in 1996, and since then our staff has been creating CLEC strategies in an effort to maximize profits for new entrants. During that time frame ISG has helped hundreds of entrants become CLEC’s, Inter-Exchange Carriers and VoIP providers.

Our legal staff combined with the retention of some of the best telecom attorney’s in the USA, when needed for certain jurisdictions, makes us the only choice for certifications with any PUC (Public Utility Commission) throughout the USA or the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). In 2008 we introduced international certifications for our clients wishing to do business in Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Eastern Block. Our focus has been the same for twenty + years – “Get our clients certified in the shortest period of time with the least amount of energy on their part”. I think another important issue is security, VoIP providers have to be able supply reliable and secure connections as the threat from phishing and other scams becomes more prevalent.

The points you have mentioned are all very important and they should all be considered when short listing.

One of the most invaluable lessons I have learned here in the UK is to check the website for testimonials or case studies, then call the customer directly. This not only allows you to check that the provider is doing what they say on their website but also that the call quality is good.

Hope this adds to an already excellent article :)

One of the guidelines in choosing the ideal VoIP are:
– Low-cost hardware, support and upgrades
– Unlimited calling around the world
– New features not available with older phone systems
– Installation, maintenance, and support for Staffordshire customers
– Migration from your current business phone system to VoIP

This was a very good informational article. The company that I work for is having major issues with our phones. The office manager is located in another state and the phone line is currently not working. The phone provider has been saying what wrong, like terrorist trying to hack into the phone, but has yet to provide a solution. They also continue to charge for services that should be covered under warranty. Customer service is very important when dealing with these types of situations. Especially, when you don’t know the technicalities of how things are run with the phone system.
