Well, will we or won’t we?See VoIP on the iPhone, that is. We’ve heard about all kinds of VoIP hacks and applications for the iPhone:
The topic arose again lately, when last week iPhone announced at its Software Roadmap event that the iPhone will be opened up to third-party developers. Apple will push for additional e-mail functions and other software, said Apple worldwide marketing head Phil Schiller.iPhone’s statement: “If an Application requires or will have access to the carrier network, then additionally such Application: … May not have Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) functionality” leaves opportunities for VoIP over WiFi open if a third party writes the application.
Apple and AT&T won’t allow VoIP over the cell network, but who knows what we might see down the road?
Still, even being able to make VoIP calls when WiFi is available will help iPhone users save their minutes.
With part of the big push for iPhone software and applications being driven by its use in enterprise, the iPhone does raise some security issues for companies concerned about sensitive information.
