Apple’s eagerly-anticipated iPhone may be VoIP ready through its WiFi connection, adding one more attractive feature to the phone. The iPhone is already the electronic accessory to have. Bye bye, Razor.
Though the iPhone is larger than many mobile phones and its touch screen may put off some buyers, Apple expects its new product to be a hot seller.
It also may be the best vehicle to shift session initiation protocol devices into the mainstream market.

The iPhone’s unique address book would make it possible for users to select a name in their address book, and push the “call” button—all via VoIP and WiFi. It’s just really expensive to do it.
The iPhone, set to be released in the United States next Friday, will be priced at $600 USD. Don’t forget to tack on AT&T’s monthly fees, for a calling plan as well as data service. Then you’ll have to add in the VoIP plan—which is only available when you’re in WiFi range.
So, maybe that’s not so exciting. Still, it’s one more step toward mobile VoIP, even if it’s just a little bitty step. The main reason many users choose VoIP in the first place is for cost savings—which certainly aren’t present here.
Also, AT&T won’t be too thrilled about customers using its service to connect via VoIP—the telecommunications provider stands to benefit the least from mobile VoIP.
AT&T Wireless will offer calling plans specific to the iPhone.
Also, a new relationship with Cisco (beyond battling for the name “iPhone”) may enable the iPhone to use Cisco’s VPN and VoIP systems.
