For businesses utilizing VoIP for their telecommunications needs, monitoring tools can be a handy little item to keep things running smoothly.
Branch offices are one area many companies can benefit from using VoIP. The flexibility and functionality of VoIP make it attractive, but also require a little bit of babysitting to perform at its best.
With IT personnel usually stretched pretty thin, most companies can benefit from IP telephony management tools. These applications are available from Infovista, Integrated Research/Prognosis, Fluke Networks, NetIQ and NetQOS, among others.
With VoIP being more susceptible to delay and packet loss than e-mail or web services, monitoring can help boost call quality.
These management tools can result in lowered operation costs for VoIP networks. Nemertes Research asked 120 IT experts a series of questions regarding VoIP and their management tools to build a cost-per-unit analysis:
- -With no IP telephony management tools, companies spent $1,262 per unit per year to operate the system.
- -Those using tools from the IP PBX vendor spent $405 per unit per year to operate the system.
- - Those who use specialty IP telephony management tools spent only $113 per unit per year in operational costs.
“The numbers speak for themselves,†writes Robin Gareiss, executive vice president and senior founding partner for Nemertes Research. “If you’re considering or deploying VoIP, you’ll save on operational costs by using monitoring/management tools from the PBX vendor, and even more by using specialty IP telephony management tools.â€

A quick search on Google for “VoIP Monitoring†will yield pages and pages of results, leaving it up to IT professionals to choose the solution that best fits their needs.
