Mobile VoIP gains another toehold in Europe as Vyke announces its plans to provide customers with access to VoIP calling services from any hotspot operated by The Cloud Networks Ltd.
The Cloud operates 9,000 WiFi hotspots in the United Kingdom and abroad, located in many public venues and 16 “high density metropolitan areas.â€
“Combined with Vyke’s mobile VoIP service, The Cloud’s wireless network represents a shift in the mobile telecoms paradigm,†said Jan Christian Berger, executive vice president of sales for Vyke. “Access to city wide WiFi zones means that Vyke users living or working in these areas will be able to access low cost mobile VoIP communication services at virtually any point during their day-to-day lives. The power behind our relationship with The Cloud will be evident as users in these areas realize that they always have a low cost alternative available.â€
The service is also available in some locations in Africa.
Great!
But will the cellular phone providers fight it? Mobile phone operators haven’t been too thrilled in the past about their customers using mobile handsets to make VoIP calls.
Vyke’s service “effectively bypasses†the cellular service provider.
But when customers can enjoy cost savings of up to 90% on international calls, why shouldn’t they choose VoIP over traditional mobile phone service?
The fact of the matter is, the industry continues to move toward true mobile VoIP. Mobile phone providers need to craft services and plans they can agree with, or find some other way to come to terms with their customers choosing VoIP rates over cellular.
