VoIP users are clamoring for better mobile access, and it looks like Skype is going to throw themselves into the mix—in the United Kingdom, at least.
Mobile provider Three plans to offer a phone in the U.K. with Skype “fully integrated,†enabling the user to make free mobile-to-mobile calls. Three may release the phone later this year.
The setup will be devoid of the usual VoIP trappings: Computer, phone, etc. A spokesman said the phone will work like standard mobile phones, but may have the ability to switch automatically between VoIP and cellular service, depending on which has lower rates.
Three reportedly has one of the largest shares of the 3G spectrum in the U.K.
Analysts are predicting the new phone will bring a lower-price trend to the mobile calling world.
Who will bring it to the U.S.? We’ve been waiting to hear more about Google’s Gphone. Or there’s Sprint Nextel, who could take over Vonage after its patent suit victory, and integrate Vonage’s VoIP services with its own wireless network. Of course, without the extensive 3G network that the U.K. enjoys, wireless VoIP in the U.S. may not catch up right away.
