Avaya, Cisco and Nortel are expected to release patches for newly found security issues in their VoIP systems.
The vulnerabilities, found by VoIPshield Laboratories, could allow attacks in remote code execution, unauthorized access, denial of service and information harvesting if targeted by online criminals.
Network World reports that VoIPshield alerted the three manufacturers of the security flaws in order for them to develop the patches, according to Rick Dalmazzi, president and CEO of VoIPshield. Dalmazzi and the three vendors are keeping mum on more details due to an aggreement for a simultaneous announcement, and he expects two will have patches available June 25, and the third may issue an advisory.
VoIP PBX voice servers and softphone software for laptops and desktops are vulnerable, and the security flaws were ranked “critical†or “high†by VoIPshield, the company’s top ratings for vulnerability.
Dalmazzi says VoIPshield tested Avaya, Cisco and Nortel since they are the three largest providers of IP PBXs in North America. Microsoft products will be tested in the near future.
