Have U.S. VoIP providers overlooked security issues? A survey by In-Stat says yes.
More than 80 percent of survey participants were using VoIP communications, but security was overlooked.
“An In-Stat survey of US businesses found that no mechanisms for securing VoIP had more than 50 percent penetration across all sizes of business,” said In-Stat analyst Victoria Fodale. “Proactive measures, including periodic security audits and pre-deployment assessments, had low percentages of penetration too, even among the larger organizations.”
Many businesses are expanding their VoIP systems beyond the local area network, yet were “not taking VoIP infrastructure security seriously enough†or increasing security to match the extended systems.
In-Stat’s research found that “between 2007 and 2010, an estimated 168 million IP PBX lines will be shipped into the business premises.â€
With security so much at issue since VoIP became popular, it seems a gross oversight to overlook security issues.
But are they really issues? Despite In-Stat’s research—available for purchase, of course—a simple search on the Internet yielded no shortage of increased VoIP security upgrades. Companies like Exteme Networks, Ingate, FaceTime and Sipera have new security products. Are they not being implemented?
