The facts and figures vary, but for most of the world’s major markets, VoIP use by individuals and businesses is growing.
United States
TeleGeography estimates that VoIP subscribers in the United States will reach 23.3 million by 2011. There are currently 11.8 million VoIP users.
“VoIP service in the US has emerged as a mainstream service that is causing traditional service providers some headaches,” said Stephan Beckert, TeleGeography analyst, in a statement.
TeleGeography attributes the growth to cable providers’ VoIP offerings, which are currently stronger than independent VoIP companies such as Vonage. Cable companies are currently experiencing higher subscriber growth than independents.
Europe
Across the ocean, Europe’s VoIP rate is really booming. TeleGeography predicts VoIP use will top 40 percent of households by 2011.
“In Europe, VoIP could fundamentally change the structure of the fixed-line market,†says Beckert.
The difference between the markets is partly due to more aggressive competition and pricing, and partly to “freer access to incumbents’ local copper loops.†Active participation from traditional phone providers also plays a part—these providers are embracing VoIP, as opposed to U.S. phone companies, who are not.
In the United Kingdom, businesses especially are jumping on the VoIP bandwagon although private users aren’t as enthusiastic about VoIP calling as the rest of Europe.
Low costs and easy installation are the draw to companies of all sizes.
Asia
In China, VoIP use has exceeded that of the Public Switched Telephone Network, according to market research engine ReportLinker.
The report places VoIP calls at 110 billion minutes as of this month last year. Forty-three percent of long-distance calls were made using VoIP.
