More than 10.6 million US households now have at least one active VoIP user, according to In-Stat.
Cable companies are driving a lot of this growth, at the expense of most client-based VoIP firms with the notable exception of Skype.
Most VoIP displaces traditional switched-network service. More than 61% of active residential VoIP users said that they cut their landlines when they got VoIP.
Skype is the service of choice when it comes to making international VoIP calls. It is the leading client-based service, and 52% of the calls made with that type of VoIP are placed to other countries.
Only 6% of calls from network/ATA-based VoIP services like those offered by cable companies and Vonage are international long distance.
Half of residential VoIP users also use the service to make business calls.
