A new partnership between chip manufacturer Broadcom Corporation and software designer Trolltech will produce a multimedia-enabled VoIP platform for Linux devices.

The VoIP platform, called Otopia, will enable a graphical user experience with high quality voice and video. It’s designed to support unified communications and full Web integration.

“The VoIP platform will provide OEMs with an integrated software package that enables faster time-to-market for the development of next generation IP phones,” according to a press release. “Qtopia software enables users to easily access any website or multimedia content, turning the IP phone into the communications center of the digital home.”

“As Internet telephony becomes a more mainstream solution, and the need for highly integrated, high performance VoIP solution increases, leading phone manufacturers will continue looking to Broadcom as their supplier of IP phone chips,” says Martyn Humphries, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s VoIP line of business. “With Trolltech’s ability to provide the development tools and frameworks, we enable our customers to provide high functionality Multimedia IP Startpoint(TM) devices and a great user interface to the market more rapidly.”

The system uses Broadcom’s BCM1103 VoIP processor and BCM1180 video and multimedia co-processor for voice services and graphical content, including two-way H.264 CIF video calling. The BCM1103 features an integrated MIPS(R) processor, a digital signal processing processor, a Gigabit Ethernet switch and Fast Ethernet physical layer devices. The low-power-requirement BCM1180 is compatible with the VideoCore family.

This setup allows for development of new products as well as compatibility with previous versions, so manufacturers can engineer phones with GbE switching and other functions for better sound quality and security. A single chip handles video and audio processing, polyphonic sound synthesis, an LCD controller, and SRAM.
